Wisdom Tooth Removal

Most of us will experience pain when the wisdom tooth erupts. But extreme pain and swelling can be an indication that you need a wisdom tooth extraction.

An oral Examination is done and x-rays of the mouth, aid to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth. This clinical and imaging work-up will predict if there are present or future potential problems.

Why Should One Have Wisdom Teeth Removed?

If a person does not have enough room in the mouth for third molars to fully erupt, complications might occur.

Impacted wisdom teeth or wisdom tooth that is stuck in the bone and do not get enough space to erupt should be removed before the root structure is fully developed or if it causes pain even after development.

The age at which the wisdom tooth erupts varies from person to person, some might get them as early as 12 or 13 and some might get them in their late twenties.

Some of the possible complications that can arise from not removing wisdom teeth include:

  • 1. wisdom tooth infection- impacted tooth can act as a magnet for infection-causing bacteria.
  • 2. wisdom tooth cyst formation - if the wisdom tooth is only partially erupted, there are chances of the formation of painful cysts.
  • 3. Impacted wisdom teeth may contribute to the crowding of your teeth.
  • 4. In case of an inadequate room to clean around the wisdom tooth, the tooth adjacent, the second molar, can be adversely affected resulting in infection, gum disease, bone loss around the tooth, and/or decay.

Is it compulsory to remove the wisdom tooth?

No. As long as your mouth has enough room for your teeth and is not causing any trouble, your wisdom teeth can stay. But it is important to get an opinion from your dentist to check what will be best for you.
